Atenolol versus propranolol A comparison of ocular hypotensive
نویسندگان
چکیده
Both atenolol and propranolol by mouth reduce ocular tension in normal and glaucomatous eyes (Phillips, Howitt, and Rowlands, i967; Elliot, Cullen, and Phillips, 1975; Wettrell and Pandolfi, 1975). These drugs are f-adrenergic blockers but propranolol affects both P1 and 32 receptors (as well as having a 'membrane' effect), while atenolol is a more specific 31 receptor antagonist and lacks the membrane-stabilizing activity of propranolol.

Atenolol versus propranolol. A comparison of ocular hypotensive effect of an oral dose.
In a controlled double-blind cross-over trial in 10 patients comprising six with open-angle glaucoma, three with closed-angle glaucoma, and one with ocular hypertension, a single oral dose of atenolol (50 mg) was significantly more effective than propranolol (40 mg) in reducing ocular tension.
متن کاملEffects of betaxolol on cardiohemodynamics and coronary circulation in anesthetized dogs: comparison with atenolol and propranolol.
Effects of betaxolol, a cardioselective beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, on cardiohemodynamics and coronary circulation were investigated in two kinds of anesthetized open-chest dog preparations in comparison with those of atenolol and propranolol. When administered intravenously, betaxolol, atenolol and propranolol produced dose-dependent decreases in the heart rate (HR), maximum left ventricular...
متن کاملLong-term hypotensive effect of atenolol 4% eyedrops.
The effect of long-term application of 4% atenolol eye drops has been studied in patients with either glaucoma or ocular hypertension. In some patients who show a good initial response the ocular hypotensive effect gradually wears off with long-term use. This pattern of response appears to be more frequent in patients with pretreatment intraocular pressure of 25 mmHg, or greater. In combination...
متن کاملhypotensive effects of acetazolamide and atenolol
The ocular hypotensive effect of single oral doses of (a) atenolol (50mg), (b) acetazolamide (500 mg), (c) atenolol (50 mg) and acetazolamide (500 mg) in combination, and (d) vehicle (inert tablets) were compared in 8 patients with glaucoma. In this single-dose, double-masked trial the combination was observed as most effective in reducing ocular tension. Both the combination and atenolol perfo...
متن کاملAtenolol versus adrenaline eye drops and an evaluation of these two combined.
In a 1-day, 1-dose, double-masked, randomised trial, with each of 12 patients acting as his/her own control, atenolol drops 4% (a selective beta1-adrenergic blocker) produced a significantly greater fall in ocular tension measured by applanation than did adrenaline drops 1% (P is less than 0.01 Wilcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test). The mean differences, which favoured atenolol, between the...
